Pilgrims Report step 5

The next step is printing then your report is complete

Why did the Pilgrims leave?

Some people ask why did the pilgrims leave. The Pilgrims left in 1620, because King James I wanted every one in his kingdom to be in the same religion as him – the church of England. If they did not obey they would have consequences. The

Puritans or Pilgrims wanted religion to be pure and simple.

The Pilgrims did not want to be part of the church of England, because they thought that the church of England paid too much attention to the church leaders and not to God and the Bible and praying.

Many Pilgrims hosted secret church services in their homes. Soon the king found out about these secret church meetings, and the pilgrim leaders were thrown in jail. The Pilgrims knew they had to do something about this. The Pilgrims moved to Holland, Netherlands in 1608 so they could worship how they wanted. The Pilgrims lived in Holland for twelve years. Life in Holland was not easy. There were not many job opportunities. The Pilgrims made very little money. The Pilgrims were also worried that their children would forget how to speak English. They also did not want them to grow up as soldiers or sailors for Holland.

Houses and clothes

Most Pilgrim houses were simple and wooden and thatched roof and paper dipped in oil to let in light. For temporary houses the built dugouts and wigwams. Clothes were always re-used. Woman wore three petti coats and wool

caps. Woman and men slept in long woolen shirts called nightgowns.

Woman’s clothes were very hot they wore three petti coats under neath her  skirt. They also wore pockets around their waists with a string drawn through them to keep her pocket in place. Boys wore breeches and a double jacket over his shirt.

Most Pilgrims houses were one room separated by a fire place. With a wooden door on the other side of the fire place so had a place for cooking and a sleeping quarters.

Roofs were made out of reads gathered by the river edge but, the reeds caught on fire very easily if a spark would fly out of the fire place, It would start a fire. Latter they used wooden shingles.

Probably after a while I would get sick of the same clothes. I Also would have gotten very very hot after a while, because girls wore petti coats under neath their dress. Also children from the age of new born to seven would dresses that tied in the back so their parents could grab them before they ran into trouble or got in to mischief. Kids older the seven years old would wear clothes like there parents just smaller.

Food and Laundry

In Pilgrims houses tables were two barrels with a board across to middle. Plates were a block of wood with the middle dug out their silverware was their fingers. Laundry was done very often mattresses were made out of corn-husks or feathers. (if you were lucky) so many things smelled musty.

Laundry was done very often because things would get dirty very quickly. In odder to do laundry you would need to make a large fire soak the clothes and let them dry on fences.

Pilgrims ate many different types of food like mussels, indian corn, and many vegetables from gardens. The Pilgrims hunted venison many sea creatures. Sometimes sea birds and geese.

I think I would get sick of the same food. I don’t think they had much sugar so nothing would taste very sweet. Not at all like england. On the may flower laundry was not done at all and the food would taste horrible.

On thanks giving a lot of the pilgrims danced sang did races and contests  the women did cooking. It was a BIG feast. The pilgrims invited the Wampanoag to celebrate the great harvest. The Indians brought five deer to add to the feast.

During the thanks giving feast I would have been over joyed by all the food. I would be proud of all the work I did.

Squanto and Samoset came with ninety braves to the thanks giving feast. Along with chief Massosoet.

Sickness and Troubles

Scurvy was very contagious it is caused by a lack of vitamin D its like the flu but with loose teeth and bleeding gums. Another trouble was crime punishment it could contain public whipping hanged or banished from the city. Also the long winter on 50 passengers survived half of them children.

For medicine people would give the sick herbs or apply leaches to draw blood. People did not understand how germs got passed. Also when he Pilgrims were on the mayflower would swallow ate a spoonful of lemon juice to prevent scurvy.

Another problem was that the speedwell (the second ship of the Pilgrims) kept on springing leaks. Which caused them to all get on the Mayflower. The pilgrims sold the speedwell for lumber. Also the pilgrims ran out of food and people kept on getting sick.

Another problem was that there was not enough room so families were cramped in to small living spaces. So, many of the Pilgrims could not bring that many possessions sometimes even family I know I could not leave some of my relatives and I would never see them again. I would be horrified

The Mayflower

The Mayflower carried seventy adults along with thirty-two children. A couple chickens and two dogs.

The Pilgrims set sail on August five 1620 which was late for that long of a voyage. The Pilgrims sailed south west across the Atlantic ocean. The Pilgrims landed on November twenty-one 1620 Massachusetts Plymouth rock.

The Pilgrims sailed across the Atlantic ocean for sixty-six days that is almost three months. Also half way through the voyage the main beam cracked so they had to use a jack type thing to put the main beam back in place which they brought along for building houses.

I don’t think I could have left all of my friends and my country. All I’ve ever known. It would have been very difficult.

There were no friends to help the Pilgrims when they got to the new land. There was a great space of land left by other indians when the tribe got wiped out. The Pilgrims said “Its a blessing from God.” I think that too.

I hope you understand more about the pilgrims I know I do.
