Week of February 10-14

No school on Friday the 14th or Monday the 17th!

Changes Unit- We will continue meeting as a grade and in our boy/girl groups to talk through our changes unit. We will finish this week. 

All school chapel- Join us on Tuesday morning at 9:00 in the gym.

Middle School Chapel- Thursday in the media center at 11:50.

Valentines day treats: Some of the students have been asking! We do not do any sort of Valentines day party in 6th grade, but we know students LOVE the opportunity to share treats with one another, so we will allow time on Thursday during lunch if students would like to bring a treat for their homeroom class (28 students). We will give them time to pass things out during lunch and this is totally optional!!

Bible:  Memory work: Galatians 5:24-26 due on Monday! No new memory work for this week. We will do a unit review and final project on the Passover. 

Social Studies/Estudios Sociales: We will continue to look at the geography of Ancient China and we will begin to look at the different Emperors and how they established the first cities and empires. Vamos a continuar a ver la geografía de la antigua China y vamos a hablar sobre los emperadores y los logros que tuvieron a asentar los primeros imperios. 

Writing (English): We are coming to a close with our Esperanza Rising Unit. This week students will be finishing the book and then, over the course of the next two weeks, we will be working on an Esperanza Rising Final Scrapbook Project

Homework for Mrs. Donkersloot’s Class: Book Job #10 due Thursday, Feb. 13th. Scrapbook Project Interview due by class on Thursday, Feb 13th. 

Homework for Mrs. Van Dyk’s class:  Tuesday, February 11: Literature Circle Job #9 (pp. 213-231) Wednesday, February 12: Interview write up submitted Thursday, February 13:Literature Circle Job #10 (finish the book)

Spanish Immersion: We will be discussing chapters 8-11 of Cajas de Cartón. We will also review the difference between preterit and the imperfect. We will review the present subjunctive.  Spanish Immersion Homework: Finish reading chapter 12 of Cajas de Cartón if you were not able to finish it at school. Due this Thursday, February 13

LA 2 (Spanish): In class we will be reading Esperanza Renace. LA 2 (Spanish) Homework: Whatever the students didn’t have time to finish in class, they will need to complete it for homework. 

LA 1: We will develop a claim, free-write about the prompt to generate ideas and then develop a sufficiently narrow claim. We will also learn that for  the claim to be persuasive, an argument writer must support it with the most effective evidence that comes from a variety of credible sources. Credible sources are websites, reports, and articles developed by experts and journalists.

Study skills (6L only): We will continue to talk about note taking and we will also talk about strategies for reading comprehension.

Math – This week we will be wrapping our chapter on fractions.  We will be having a quiz on Wednesday or Thursday depending how far we get.  

Science – We will continue to investigate forces and how things get crushed this week.  We will discover how balanced forces become unbalanced and how mass and acceleration play a role.
