Week of February 3-7

General Information:

Spirit Week for Middle School! It is an opportunity for students to dress up if they would like, based on themes that our student voice team have chosen!!

Monday – ‘Merica Monday (red, white and blue- no politics, no hats!)

Tuesday – Team Day Tuesday 

Wednesday – Who am I? Wednesday (character/athlete/artist day)

Thursday – Monochromatic Day (one color)

Friday – Comfy Day

PBIS- AMOR launch: On Monday we will launch our new behavior initiative as a whole school. This will involve an assembly, time with our family groups learning our expectations. (Information about this was sent home in the envelopes with report cards) 

Changes Unit: We will be launching our changes unit this week Tuesday! We will update the blog daily with a post about our topic and discussion for the day. 

Community Learning afternoon: We will head out into the community with our Small Groups to learn about how organizations are being the hands and feet of Jesus in the Holland/Zeeland area.

Our Community Connection partner is Good Samaritan Ministries. As we are learning about the many ways they serve and build relationships in our community, we are excited for the opportunity to help by collecting supplies to put in Family Game Night Baskets for the families that GSM is serving. If you are able to, please help us by donating any of the following items: games & puzzles (gently used or new), playdough (new), Legos, microwave popcorn, and other snacks. Donations can be brought to the table near the middle school entrance between now and Thursday, February 6. Thank you!   -Mrs. Klompmaker’s Small Group

Classwork and Assignments: 

Bible Memory: Galatians 5: 24-26 due on Friday

Bible: We will talk about the Holy Spirit and Resurrection Joy. We will also learn about what happened in the Garden of Gethsemane and Jesus’ arrest. 

Social Studies/Estudios Sociales: We will begin our unit on Ancient China. We will look at the geography and first settlements. Vamos a empezar la unidad sobre la Antigua China. Vamos a ver la geografía y los primeros asentamientos. Mr. Zhou, our MS Mandarin teacher, will share a presentation with us as he is from China and can share first hand what life is like in China!!

Science – This week we will be discovering what happens when we push or pull something and examine the forces that are acting on different objects.  Then, for lesson 3, we will be exploring why things get crushed.

Math – We finished up quizzes on Friday.  Quiz corrections will be due on Wednesday.  After adding and subtracting fractions we will be getting into multiplying and dividing.  

Writing (English): This week in LA2 we will be working on conducting interviews with people in our community circle who have immigrated from another country. Our goal is to learn about their experience, first hand, and make connections to the book we are reading (which is about a girl who immigrated to the United States). Our final goal with the interview information is to create a scrapbook of experiences based on the real experiences of the people we interviewed. Homework (for Mrs. Donkersloot’s class only): p. 214-233 and book job.

Spanish Immersion: We will be discussing chapters 6-9 of Cajas de Cartón. We will also review the difference between preterit and the imperfect. We will review the present subjunctive  Spanish Immersion Homework: Finish reading chapters 10 & 11 of Cajas de Cartón if you were not able to finish it at school. Due this Friday, February 7

LA 2 (Spanish): In class we will be reading Esperanza Renace from chapter 9-12 and completing a study guide and discussing it. LA 2 (Spanish) Homework: Whatever the students didn’t have time to finish in class, they will need to complete it for homework. 

LA 1: We will develop a claim, free-write about the prompt to generate ideas and then develop a sufficiently narrow claim. We will also learn that for  the claim to be persuasive, an argument writer must support it with the most effective evidence that comes from a variety of credible sources. Credible sources are websites, reports, and articles developed by experts and journalists.

Study skills (6L only): We will continue to talk about note taking and we will also talk about strategies for reading comprehension.

Week of January 27-31

Notes and upcoming events: 

Report Cards: We will be sending home report cards in sealed envelopes with the students on Tuesday the 28th. Please take some time to look at your child’s report card and share it with them. Comments this term were made by a teacher other than your child’s homeroom teacher, to observe what we see in different classroom settings. Please let us know if you have any questions about these! The envelope will also contain information about our new behavior initiative, AMOR. 

Middle School Chapel: We will have Middle School chapel this Thursday.

Family Group Sledding: On friday we will be sledding and eating lunch with our family groups. Please make sure you have outdoor clothes and bring a lunch from home. You may order a sack lunch, but you must order by Monday the 27th. Please email Mrs. Hernandez to order the sack lunch.

Classwork and Assignments:

Bible Memory: Galatians 5:22-23 due on Friday

Bible: We will continue our unit on the last week of Jesus life. We will look at when Judas betrays Jesus, the Lord’s supper and Jesus’ final farewell. Most of the work will be done in class. If not done in class then it will be homework, but I will update the blog as needed. 

Social Studies/Estudios Sociales: We will finish our unit on India by creating Palm Leaf books on the achievements of Ancient India. Vamos a terminar nuestra unidad sobre India creando Libros de Palma sobre los logros de la Antigua India. If you have brown lunch bags you could send in we would appreciate it!

Math – We will be solving equations with fractions in 5-4 and have a quiz on Wednesday.  The next few lessons will be about multiplying and dividing fractions.

Science – We will be wrapping up our unit on Body Systems this week and start a new unit on Forces and Motion.  

Writing (English): We will continue reading Esperanza Rising and start planning our final project. Here a link to the description of the final project. There is no due date for this project yet, but we want to get students thinking about who they will interview and what types of questions they will ask during their interview. Homework: Lit Circle Job #7 (p. 158-178) due Tuesday and Lit Circle Job #8 (p. 178-213) due Thursday.
