Week of February 24-28

Coin Wars for Leand: We will start collecting coins and bills this week!!! Let’s see which homeroom will win!!

Family Groups: We will meet with our family groups on Monday. We will have a Praise Party!

Unified Basketball Game: Wednesday at 1:00 we will host the ZCS vs. Baldwin St, Unified basketball game! Please wear your Unified shirt (if you ordered one) or wear all blue!!!! You can pick up your shirt in the office on Tuesday. 

Middle School chapel: We will have chapel on Thursday at 11:50 in the media center.

End of the term is Friday. New specials start next week!!

March Madness Book bracket: Optional fun reading “competition” for 6th and 7th graders! Check out the bracket board in the Middle School area for the titles (rivals). Read the books going up against each other and then vote for your favorites on the assigned days. Most voted books move on to Elite 8, Final 4 and winner!! 

Bible: We will continue our unit on Jesus’ final days. We will look at the Jewish trial and Peter’s denial. Memory work: Romans 1:16-17 due on Friday.  (written or spoken) 

Social Studies/Estudios Sociales: We will finish our unit on the first emperor of China and then we will begin to look at the Han Dynasty. Vamos a terminar nuestra unidad sobre el primer emperador de China y luego vamos a aprender sobre la Dinastía Han. 

English Writing: In our LA writing class we are wrapping up our Esperanza Rising unit. We’ve finished the book and are responding to what we’ve learned by creating a scrapbook of the immigrant experience. We have conducted personal interviews to help us create these scrapbooks. We will spend most of our class period time working on completing these next week. Homework (Mrs. Donkersloot’s Class): Scrapbook Project due Wednesday (2/26), Esperanza Rising Final Test on Friday (2/28)

Math – This week we will continue to learn about statistics and how to interpret graphs.  We will be discussing statistical questions and starting a project where they will collect data on their classmates.  

Science – This week we will continue to investigate how force and mass influence change in motion of objects.  They will be building a mock cell-phone and design a case that protects it from damage while considering what we have learned about collisions. 

Spanish Immersion: We will begin learning about Mexico, it’s history and biography. We will continue to review past perfect and past progressive. 

Spanish Immersion Homework: we will have the DOL Semana 6 Test retakes on Wednesday, February 26 for the students that need it. 

LA 2 (Spanish): We will learn how to write letters of complaint. Student’s formal letter of complaint will be due on Friday, February 28.

LA 1: We will work on our persuasive paragraph. Students will need to argue in support of an idea or argue against an idea by supporting their claims with credible evidence from credible sources. 

Study skills (6L only): We will be working with an independent study topic that the students will choose. 

 

Week of February 17-21

No school on Monday February 17

Small Group: We will meet with our small groups this week Thursday. 

Bible: We will finish our unit review (due Tuesday at the end of class) and then we will begin looking at Jesus’ death. We will learn about the garden of Gethsemane and Jesus’ arrest.  Bible Memory: James 1:2-4 due on Friday

Social Studies/ Estudios Sociales: We will begin learning about the Emperors of China and their accomplishments. Vamos a aprender sobre los primeros emperadores de China y sus logros. 

Spanish Immersion: We will conclude discussing the last chapters of Cajas de Cartón.  Spanish Immersion Homework: we will have the DOL Semana 6 Test on Wednesday, February 19.

LA 2 (Spanish): In class we will finish the last chapters of Esperanza Renace. 

LA 1: We will develop a claim, free-write about the prompt to generate ideas and then develop a sufficiently narrow claim. We will also learn that for  the claim to be persuasive, an argument writer must support it with the most effective evidence that comes from a variety of credible sources. Credible sources are websites, reports, and articles developed by experts and journalists.

Study skills (6L only): We will talk about planning projects and taking tests.

Week of February 10-14

No school on Friday the 14th or Monday the 17th!

Changes Unit- We will continue meeting as a grade and in our boy/girl groups to talk through our changes unit. We will finish this week. 

All school chapel- Join us on Tuesday morning at 9:00 in the gym.

Middle School Chapel- Thursday in the media center at 11:50.

Valentines day treats: Some of the students have been asking! We do not do any sort of Valentines day party in 6th grade, but we know students LOVE the opportunity to share treats with one another, so we will allow time on Thursday during lunch if students would like to bring a treat for their homeroom class (28 students). We will give them time to pass things out during lunch and this is totally optional!!

Bible:  Memory work: Galatians 5:24-26 due on Monday! No new memory work for this week. We will do a unit review and final project on the Passover. 

Social Studies/Estudios Sociales: We will continue to look at the geography of Ancient China and we will begin to look at the different Emperors and how they established the first cities and empires. Vamos a continuar a ver la geografía de la antigua China y vamos a hablar sobre los emperadores y los logros que tuvieron a asentar los primeros imperios. 

Writing (English): We are coming to a close with our Esperanza Rising Unit. This week students will be finishing the book and then, over the course of the next two weeks, we will be working on an Esperanza Rising Final Scrapbook Project

Homework for Mrs. Donkersloot’s Class: Book Job #10 due Thursday, Feb. 13th. Scrapbook Project Interview due by class on Thursday, Feb 13th. 

Homework for Mrs. Van Dyk’s class:  Tuesday, February 11: Literature Circle Job #9 (pp. 213-231) Wednesday, February 12: Interview write up submitted Thursday, February 13:Literature Circle Job #10 (finish the book)

Spanish Immersion: We will be discussing chapters 8-11 of Cajas de Cartón. We will also review the difference between preterit and the imperfect. We will review the present subjunctive.  Spanish Immersion Homework: Finish reading chapter 12 of Cajas de Cartón if you were not able to finish it at school. Due this Thursday, February 13

LA 2 (Spanish): In class we will be reading Esperanza Renace. LA 2 (Spanish) Homework: Whatever the students didn’t have time to finish in class, they will need to complete it for homework.

Math – This week we will be wrapping our chapter on fractions.  We will be having a quiz on Wednesday or Thursday depending how far we get.  

Science – We will continue to investigate forces and how things get crushed this week.  We will discover how balanced forces become unbalanced and how mass and acceleration play a role.
