Newsletter 23: Week ending March 6

It feels like we turned the corner toward spring! The kids (and their teachers) are so happy not to have to bundle quite so much before heading to the playground. 🙂 I appreciated meeting with many of you in the beginning of the week and will continue to assess everyone in the next couple weeks. I’m proud of the growth I see! We had fun in our silly socks on Wednesday and read a couple Dr. Seuss books just for fun. We continue to count the minutes of 100% Spanish, focusing on speaking Spanish even with friends, and working hard to earn some special pencils. It’s been a good week!

Curriculum

Bible: We started a new unit on parables. We have read two parables so far: The Good Samaritan and The Lost Son. After reading each of the parables we’ll complete a simple craft. After The Good Samaritan we cut out a heart with the Bible verse, Ama a tu projimo como a ti mismo, (Love your neighbor as yourself) and after reading about the Lost Son, we made a craft that said Jesús perdona, (Jesus forgives.) This coming week we’ll continue with more parables and begin learning our Easter Bible verse which is below.

Mateo 28:5-6

“The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay.” Matthew 28:5-6

Literacy: This week we talked about the verb estar, to be, and how to use it to describe where someone or something is. We also finished another round through the alphabet in our literacy centers! This time we practiced how to write each uppercase letter as we reviewed the name of each letter and the sound it represents. In this next round coming up we’ll focus on writing lowercase letters as we review names and sounds again.

  • Read aloud: El Hallazgo de Franklin

  • Phrase of the week: ¿Hacemos fila?
  • Words on the wall so far: el, él, no, la, si, sí, mamá, y, papá, soy, en, tu, tú, es, de, bien, son, voy, quiero, este, muy

Math: This week we finished our book on preposition and direction words. We also learned how to write some new teen numbers. This coming week we’ll continue working on numbers as well as seeing larger numbers as two smaller parts, an important step in addition and subtraction.

Writing Workshop: This week we “fixed and fancied” our favorite pattern books before sharing them with our classmates. We also continued in our unit on how to books. The kids taught me how to make a pb&j sandwich and we created a class book together with the steps they thought of.

Exploring God’s World: We are finished with our unit on motion. The kids did an awesome job drawing and creating models of barriers to stop the ping pong balls from continuing down the ramps. This we we started a new unit on living and nonliving things. We’ll be working in this unit for the next few weeks.

Up in Lights: Seth was up in lights this week! To illustrate his timeline he showed us a map. God has taken him and his family on quite the journey around the US and Mexico in his short 5 1/2 years! Seth’s joy is contagious and his love for Jesus is evident. We’re glad you’re our friend!
