Math Lesson 3-3

I had trouble a little while ago on lesson 3-3. That lesson is about dividing decimals. I didn’t have trouble with the dividing part, though. It was the placing of decimal that I couldn’t figure out. I got some help from Paula and Mr. Minkus. They taught me that the number of numbers behind the decimal that you are dividing is how may times you have to move the decimal on the answer.

Example – pg. 110 #8

84 ÷ 2.4                                                                                                                                                                                        First you divide 84 by 2.4 which equals 35 but then you have to add the decimal and since there is one number after the 2 then you move the decimal once to the right, but since the decimal gets moved to the end of the number than it is a whole number. The answer is 35.

I would have to use this if I go for a walk and walk 2.5 miles in 30 minutes and I want to know how many minutes it took me to walk per mile.

30 ÷ 2.5 =  12
