Cause of cruise ship fire was a leak, Coast Guard says
On Monday investigators were able to determine what caused the engine-room fire on the Carnival Triumph. A Coast Guard official said that a leak in a fuel oil return line caused the fire that disabled the cruise ship in the Gulf of Mexico. The Triumph left Galveston, Texas on February 7 for a four day trip to Mexico. On February 10 the fire left the ship paralyzed in the Gulf of Mexico until tugboats towed it to Mobile, Alabama. Passengers said that there were harsh conditions on the boat including overflowing toilets, long lines for food, foul odors, and tent cities for sleeping on the deck because the rooms were too hot. Passengers also complained about confusion in the immediate aftermath of the fire about whether to evacuate their rooms.
My opinion is that they should have had plans in place in case this would ever happen. I’m glad that this wasn’t as bad as it could have been and that no one was killed or severely injured. I also don’t know why the crew didn’t let the passengers know what to do or what was going on when the fire happened. I hope that investigators can figure out how to stop this from happening in the future and making cruises safer.
