Erosion Caused by Glaciers

In the past couple weeks we have been working on projects. My group, Jacob Heeres and I,  had to study erosion caused by glaciers. A few of the things in the picture below are, kettles, grooves, strations, till, moraine, arete, cirque, and plucking. There are two kinds of glaciers that we learned about, continental glacier which covers most of a continent or island and a valley glacier. Overall this was a pretty fun project. Photo on 5-14-15 at 1.19 PM #2

Mauna Loa Volcano

In the past few weeks in Science class we have been working on making and studying volcanoes.  This is the one that my group and I made together. We have things like lava flow, ashes, cinders, bombs, side vent, pipe, magma chamber, and many other things that make up a volcano. We also made a poster that describes the different kinds of volcanoes like composite, cinder cone, and shield. We tried to make ours after the Mauna Loa shield volcano in Hawaii.

Spaghetti Tower

In Science class we had to build a tower 40 centimeters tall that could hold an egg and withstand an earthquake. We had to use spaghetti sticks, marshmellows, and masking tape. Each spaghetti stick was 100 dollars, each marshmellow was 50 and each inch of tape was 25 dollars. We had a total of 4,875 dollars to spend. If we wanted to buy insurance that would be 500 dollars so by the time we bought all of our supplies and insurance we had no money left. Our tower has not collapsed so far and it can hold up an egg at 40 centimeters tall. We don’t know yet how it will do in an earthquake.  Some of the things that we learned would be good to have on our tower are that it is important to have crossbars because it helps keep the tower stable and it is also important to have a place that the egg will be secure and won’t make the tower top heavy.  So far our project has gone really well and I hope that it will withstand the earthquake.

Math Word Problem

3-5–Squares and square roots~

The area of first base is 144 inches. How long is one side of the base?

How you do this problem is if the whole area of the base is 144 inches then you have to find the square root of that. The square root of 144 is 12 and so 12 inches would be your answer.
