Newsletter May 29-June1; June 4-7

Dear parents,

This newsletter includes the information for the next two weeks. The plan of my maternity leave is that I will teach till Friday, June 1. Ann Hildenbrand (the preschool Mandarin teacher) will sub for me for the last week of school.

I have been having a wonderful year with your kids. Thank you SO much for all your volunteer works, encouragements, supports at home, prayers and gifts. I often tell myself I am so blessed to have this group of kids and parents!

Information and Reminders

Expand(ED): We are excited to offer a wide range of options for your children this summer, but at this point will have to cancel a few camps if we don’t get more people signed up by the end of the week. Please consider signing up for: Destination Imagination Camp, American Sign Language Camp, Theater Camp, Math Workshop, Math Fact Fun, Summer Running Club, and Mandarin Camp (especially 4th-6th grades). Sign up for these or other summer Expand(ED) programs here.

Bus Tags: All students must turn in their bus tags by Thursday, June 7th. Zeeland Public Transportation will charge you a fee for not returning your child’s tag and lanyard.
If your child does not ride the bus, please turn into the school office beginning Tuesday, May 29. 
If your child does ride the bus, he/she may turn in the bus tag directly to the bus driver on the last day he/she rides the bus. You may also drop the tags off in the office.

Memorial Day Parade: May 28 Thank you to Joanna Havemen, one of the Lamers, one of the Allens and Meredith Geurink for marching with us this year. If I have not hear from you, I will plan on your child marching in the parade.

Farmer’s Market and Kollen Park: Wednesday, May 30 We will leave school at 9:30. This is our last field trip. Each kid needs to bring their own snack, sack lunch and drink. We will go to Kollen Park to have lunch and play after the market. We will be back to school around 12:45. Thank you to Meredith Geurink, Cara Wickstra, Dana Moeller and Abby Allen for driving the field trip. Drivers, please bring a cooler to put the kids’ lunch in and bring all the boosters you have. Thanks!

Animal PBL(project based learning): Friday, June 1 2:30 pm at the choir room

Language Arts
Reading Strategies—cross checking: Check the pictures and context to see if you read correctly. Does it make sense? Does it sound right?

Writers’ Workshop:
We will use our writing time to go with our PBL. We will write about the animal we are researching.

Math
We finished the math curriculum of the year! We will use the last two weeks for more practices and reviews.

Science
We spent lots of time to think and make ways to present our learning. This week, we will focus on presentation skills and get ready to present our learning to you on the coming Friday.

Bible
We will continue learning about the early church: Peter escapes from prison; Philip and the Ethiopian; Saul’s conversion; Paul begins his journey; Paul and Silas in prison; Paul in Jerusalem and Paul’s shipwreck.

We will learn about the fruits of the sprit throughout the year. For the month of May, we will learn about the fruit of self-control.

We started our last PBL about animals. This week, third graders helped us jotted down the questions and we are ready to find the answers by using books, iPads and computers this week. Next week, we will think of ways to present our research results.

Bible
We will continue learning about Samuel and the Kings: Solomon asks for wisdom; Solomon builds the temple. We will go to the new testament and learn about the early church: Pentecost; Peter heals a crippled beggar.

We will learn about the fruits of the sprit throughout the year. For the month of May, we will learn about the fruit of self-control.

We will start our last PBL about animals this coming week. We will choose an animal we want to learn more about and1 brainstorm questions.

Bible
We will go back to the Old Testament and learn about Samuel and the Kings: Samuel’s birth; Samuel’s call; Israel wants a king and Saul anointed

We will learn about the fruits of the sprit throughout the year. For the month of May, we will learn about the fruit of self-control.
