Outsiders Essay

on October 17, 2014

I really like the book “The Outsiders” because the gang of greasers are all really close and they all stick up for each other no matter what. I also like this book because Ponyboy’s family really starts to understand each other towards the end. I also think that it is sad though because two of Ponyboy’s friends die and that is really tragic especially if you add that on to his parents death. Overall though it was a great book and I think that I liked the book better than the movie because it gives more details and I usually like the book better anyway. I like the theme stay gold because it means stay young and don’t get all tough and have no feelings. Staying gold means to be who you are even if it might be hard and to stick to your true self.

I think that the person who played Johnny did a really good job sticking to the book because he always seems to be nervous and he acts a lot like I though that he should. He also acted appropriately in the different scenes of the movie especially after he killed the Bob the Soc.  I also think that Ponyboy did a pretty good job because he was good at making it clear that he likes to watch the stars and the sunsets and all the acting in general. I also think that Two-Bit did a good job because he seems to have a good time with life just like in the book and is also very crazy at times. I also think Sodapop did a good job showing that he cared about Ponboy when he stuck up for him. Dally did a good job when Johnny died because he seemed genuinely upset and he did a good job acting dead after he was “shot”.

Some things from the book that don’t go with the movie are one that Sodapop isn’t even in the movie for that long and in the book Ponyboy has a really close relationship with him and I don;t think that the movies showed that very well. Another thing that I think should be changed in the movie is that the actors who played Dally and Darry should have been switched because Darry looks a lot tougher and in the book Dally is supposed to be the tough one. A third thing that doesn’t go with the movie is that at the beginning Ponyboy doesn’t get jumped, and at the end Ponyboy and Darry don’t fight which is when Soda runs to the park and after they catch him they find out that he hates it when Ponyboy and Darry fight because he never seems to know who’s side to take. He thinks that Darry yells to much but he also thinks that Ponyboy should pay more attention to what Darry has to say. One last thing that was different from the movie is that he doesn’t go to school at all what soever in the movie. In the book he goes to school at the beginning, and also at the end to get his assignment from his teacher which ends up being the book The Outsiders.

I don’t like the choice of the move directors to make Soda and Ponyboy’s relationship more important because I think that that part of the book is really important. Another thing that I think the directors should have done is made the school that Ponyboy goes to more important. In the book he loves school and at the end he write “The Outsiders” for and assignment in school but it only mentions him going to school about two times in one sentence each. One last thing I would have changed would be including Ponyboy getting jumped at the beginning. The director messed up on that because in the movie Ponyboy has a scab from where they cut him on his throat and it never explains how he even got it.

Some final thoughts that I have on the book are, good job to the author, I really enjoyed the book and wanted to keep reading. It was so good I got a little ticked off at the end of a chapter when it leaves you hanging and you have to wait for the rest of the class to catch up. I also really like all the descriptions of the people and what they are like. I could picture them very well in my head where as in some books you have to make up what the characters look like in your head. One last thing on this book is that I would recommend it to just about anyone but probably not under the age of 7th grade for sure just because it is a little violent and might be hard to read for some people. Overall I really loved the book and the movie about the Outsiders.
