  • We will be celebrating Valentines Day in our classroom on February 16 during the afternoon. We have to celebrate a bit late as Valentines falls during our midwinter break! Students may pass out pre-packaged candy with their Valentines-treats must be store bought, pre-packaged…nothing home baked. I hope this information helps!

What we are learning:

This week in Bible we began our unit on the miracles of Jesus. We started with his very first miracle-turning water into wine. We read from our Bibles and then talked about what a miracle is and that only God can do miracles. Mrs. Arnold tried herself to pour water and see if it would turn to wine and it didn’t work. We ended our time by singing Our God is a Great Big God.

In phonics this week we started with the -at family and added different sounds to -at to see what we could make. We also continued our study of long vowels and listened for long vowels we heard and wrote them in shaving cream! We also walked around school to see how many vowels we could find! Some of us found over 100!

In math this week we continued looking for groups of 10 in teen numbers. We drew pictures on our white board and circled the groups of 10 we made!

In writing this week we continued our pattern books. We are working hard at listening for the sounds in words as we say them slowly!

In Daily 5 I was able to meet with each group once and we made another pattern book during the writing portion of our Daily 5!

In science we went sliding and learned some more about push and pull as we went up and down. We figured that Mrs. Arnold went pretty far because she is pretty big;) It was definitely the highlight of our week!

What we are learning:

This week in Bible we continued our study of Jesus’ ministry here on earth. We studied Zacchaeus, Nicodemus and Mary and Martha. We learned what it means to have new life in Jesus and through the story of Mary and Martha we learned that we should never be to busy for Jesus. He is what matters most. We practiced this concept by cleaning and then taking time to stop and listen to Mrs. Arnold. It was our Mary and Martha game.

In writing this week we continued to make our pattern books. We worked on books with the pattern “I see.” We chose to write about things we see at school, outside, at home or during the summer.

During Daily 5 this week everyone was able to meet with me in their group. During our writing portion we added pattern books, allowing for everyone to make another pattern book during our week. We continue to look at spacing and punctuation as we read as well as finding our word wall words.

We added this to the word wall. We now have a, at, and, am, go, here, I, is, look, like, me, see, the, this, up and we.

This week in phonics we worked on vowels and listening for their long sound. We talked about how the long sound usually sounds just like their name. We did a sorting activity and also looked for how many vowels we had in our names.

In math this week we continued our study of teen numbers. We used mats and counters to make rows of 10 and add some “extra” on and then figured out which teen number we made. We continue to work on counting everyday during our morning meeting. This week we walked to see if we could make it to the teacher’s lounge while we were counting all the way to 89! We made it and their was a treat waiting for us when we got there!
