Please continue to check the ZCS bluenote as it comes out weekly and has a lot of school wide information.

What we are learning:

Math: We are beginning a new unit that focuses on teen numbers.

Writing: We are continuing to write to our pen pals in Mrs. Bronsink’s classroom. This is a fun way to work on our writing skills and build friendships between the classes.

Daily 5: This week we enjoyed working with our new CVC centers. Most groups were able to receive a new book to add to their book bags.

Engaging God’s World: We began a new unit on Living and Non-living things. Please ask your child how we know if something is living? We will continue this study for the next few weeks. It will lead into our PBL (project based learning) project.

Phonics: We focused on vowel e and the -ip, -ig, and -ill word families.

Bible: In Bible this week we learned about Peter healing the beggar. Also, I love devotion time with this class. They are so inquisitive and ask great questions as to what it looks like to be a disciple of Jesus. We talk often how it means to put others before ourselves and this can be so hard!

What we are learning:

Burn Bright Behaviors: This week we have focused on choosing: respect, responsibility and safety. Some of these behaviors include choosing respect in the hallway by using a quiet voice and keeping hands to yourself, choosing responsibility in the bathroom by keeping it clean, and choosing safety on the playground by using play equipment the way it was intended. All adults in the building have been looking our for these positive behaviors. When we see it we have been encouraging by saying “good job” or giving a thumb’s up and sometimes giving a burn bright ticket. We are working really hard on earning tickets AND encouraging positive behavior. One of our friends one a raffle on Friday!

Math: We have working on understanding all the ways to make ten. This is something that can be practiced at home. Find ten items (toys, crackers, rocks outside, etc) and show different combinations of the items (1+9, 2+8, 3+7 and so on).

Writing workshop: We started writing to our pen pals in Mrs. Bronsink’s room! We learned how to address the note as well as how to sign our name at the bottom. We wrote one thing about ourselves in our notes and then asked a question so we could find out more about our pen pals! We are eagerly awaiting our pen pals responses! When we wrap up this unit in a few weeks we will eat our pizza hot lunch or our lunch from home with our pen pals!

Phonics: this week we worked on some of the “o” word families (-op, -ot and -og). We are also circling back to the vowels and reviewing both long and short sounds. This week we worked on A.

Bible: we began our final unit of the year this week. We read from our Bibles the story of Jesus’ ascension as well as Pentecost. We also were introduced to our new Bible verse, Matthew 28:19-20. “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”  We talked about how this verse is what our life should be about, showing others the love of Jesus so they can follow him as well. We also learned these verses are called the Great Commission.

Finally, this week our new friend Esther was Up in Lights. Her mom, dad and two brothers came to share about her. Her mom read us the book, ” A Bad Case of the Stripes.”  We are blessed to have had Esther join our classroom! She has become a good friend to all of us!
