No School- November 22-26

Please keep practicing putting on coats and zipping!

Library is on Monday so you may return your books anytime before then

Make sure to open your child’s book bag and have them read to you! They are so proud of their reading! Also, feel free to continue to work on letters and sounds. We can never be too good with those;)

What we are learning:

In Bible this week we finished up our unit on Moses. We learned about the ten plagues, the red sea and the 10 commandments. We learned that God watches over and takes care of His people.

We added me and up to our word wall word board along with our other words: A, at, go, I, look, see and the.

In Math this week we used manipulatives to make numbers and continued learning that we can use 5 groups when we make numbers bigger than 5!

In science this week we learned about the seasons God made and what each season may bring and how it affects what we do and even how we dress.

During writing workshop we finished up our unit on labeling. We labeled a turkey and a Thanksgiving dinner table! We talked a lot this week about our favorite Thanksgiving foods! Some of my friends said pizza:)

We continued to work hard everyday during Daily 5. During our writing portion we also labeled fall things!

Finally we had so much fun on Friday with our Thanksgiving feast! Earlier in the week we made cornucopias and talked about the overflowing blessings God gives us, and then on Friday we made our very own “sugary” cornucopias and went around the table and shared things we were thankful for!

.

Finally, Braelynn Kuipers was Up in Lights. We learned many fun things about Braelynn but the highlight was her and her mom singing a duet to Hillsong’s King of Kings! It was absolutely amazing and so beautiful! We are thankful for Braelynn and the joy she brings to our room!

Thanksgiving break-November 24-28

What we are learning:

This week in Bible we are beginning our study of Moses. We took a walk down our big hill to the little stream and we read the Bible story about Moses being put in a basket and placed in a river and how God kept him safe through everything. We learned that God’s always has a way to work out his plans! We also then read the story of the burning bush from our children’s Bibles.

This week we added we and at to our word wall word board. We did some seek and find papers, our word wall books and poetry. Continue to have your children look for our word wall words in print! They love it!

In phonics this week we continued to say words in slow motion and this week we wrote the sounds we heard. This will be something we will practice all year long!

During Daily 5 we continued to choose one of our options and also got a chance to work with Mrs. Arnold. We have been drawing and labeling stories, using play-doh, stamps, beans or magnets to make letters and word wall words. We also always have a chance to work with Mrs. Arnold and read to self. Andrew also found a creative way to use our magnets!  He used the legs of his chair and put words going down! I love it!

In Math this week we did groups of five problems with our hands and then wrote a moth sentence to match. We also went outside and made story problems of things we do on the playground. I think our favorite was 11 students on top of the hill minus 11 students rolling down the hill=0!!!!!

In science this week we had the privilege of the Outdoor Discovery Center visiting us. They brought a peregrine falcon and a very large bunny that we got to see up close. We also took a walk and discovered that squirrels build nests way up in trees and they are called a dray. We got to witness the way God creates and makes seasons as well!

On Friday morning we did some Thanksgiving centers including a dot to dot up to 100 and writing things we are thankful for on little pumpkins.

November 1-5

Reminders:

Thursday November 11-NO PM Busing

Friday November 12-NO AM or PM Busing

Please start practicing taking on and off winter gear with your kids as this is something that can take up too much of our time and the more we practice the better we get. I was reminded of how close winter is getting by the chilly temps and some of the cute winter hats!

Please remember to return library books by Monday!

Continue to go over the hot lunch menu with your child to make sure he/she likes what is being served.

What we are learning:

In Bible this week we continued our study of Joseph learning how God used all the crazy twists and turns in his life for good! Just like our Bible verse, Romans 8:28, says. We watched the Veggie Tales episode, “Little Joe,” on Friday afternoon.

We were also privileged to take part in our first indoor chapel in almost two years. We had some friends from our sister school in the Philippines share during our chapel and then they spent time in our classroom talking with us about what school is like in the Philippines. Here is a link if you would like to learn a bit more about our sponsorship of a student from our sister school, GCCS.

This week we added look and see to our word wall word board which also includes A, go, I, look, see and the.

In Daily 5 this week we all had a chance to work with Mrs. Arnold, practicing reading and letter sounds. We also worked on writing, read to self and making letters and words with our word work materials.

During writing workshop we continued to work on labeling and drew an “aerial” view of our room and labeled it. This was also a great way to learn about maps and how they might look.

In Phonics this week we practiced saying things in slow motion. We first had fun doing our bodies in slow motion and then we practiced saying words in slo mo and listening for sounds. We also did some syllable review.

We started unit 2 in math this week beginning with finding groups of five. We circled groups of five and also practiced counting by adding on! I call it the “short cut” way to count!

During our free Wednesday afternoon we went outside and explored God’s world. We did leaf rubbings and then measured our leaves with unifix cubes and counted how many seconds it took for them to fall to the ground!

Nathan VanEnk was Up in Lights this week. It was so fun to learn all about Nathan and his mom even brought in his pet turtle. We also read Nathan’s favorite book and sang his favorite song! Nathan adds a wonderful smile and lots of joy to our classroom!
