What we are learning:

This week in Bible we are finishing up our Bible unit on kindness. We are finding practical ways every day where we can demonstrate kindness to those around us! Even though we are done with the unit we will continue to practice kindness.:)

We added blue and black to our word wall word list. We are continuing to review list making by making lists of colored things we know or see.

In writing this week we finished our pen pal unit and had a fun pizza lunch and activities with our pen pals from Mrs. Bronsink’s class. We also started our Project Based Learning by asking questions about the animals we have chosen and writing the answers we find! If we were not working with Mrs. Arnold we did some fun phonics and word wall word table activities!

During daily 5 this week we are continuing to work on sounding out words slowly and sliding them together and covering up part of the word to make it easier to read and decode! We also are continuing our CVC practice as well as writing sentences. We are using a writing checklist to check if we are beginning sentences with a capital letter, ending them with punctuation and using spaces between our words!

In math this week we worked on finding partners for 10 and did some grocery store addition. We are working on using math during everyday life situations. Next week we will talk about setting the table and how many places we need to set or maybe take away!

Finally on Friday we had an outdoor visit from Maestra Geurink to finish our living things unit. We were able to pet goats, cats, bunnies and even a chicken!

What we are learning:

This week in Bible we started a two week unit on kindness.  We discussed the verse, Ephesians 4:32a, “Be ye kind, one to another, tender-hearted, forgiving one another.” We came up with some kind rules for our classroom as well as started a kindness scavenger hunt. We will continue to study and practice lots and lots of kindness next week;)

In phonics this week we practiced the short and long sounds for the vowel A and worked on the -ip and -ig word families.

During writing this week we continued writing letters to our pen pals. Next week we will have a special pizza lunch together with fun activities to celebrate the completion of our pen pal unit. (It will be on Thursday so if your child would like pizza go ahead and order it for hot lunch, if not they are welcome to bring a lunch from home!)

In science this week we learned about how animals adapt to their environment, including watching a short video to see how beavers use the way God made them to help them adapt to their surroundings! We also started brainstorming about what animal we would like to learn about as we will begin our PBL study of animals next week! We were able to watch some live zoo cams during quiet time on Friday to get our brains thinking about what we would like to learn. This is a such a fun part of our year! After we complete our study we will be inviting you to come and see what we have learned!

In Daily 5 we continue to work on CVC reading and writing, with play-doh, magnets, dry erase markers and stampsl   We are also working on reading strategies when we work at the table with Mrs. Arnold. Your child should have a paper in their book bag which has the strategies on it. This week we talked often about breaking words into chunks or covering part of the word and reading part of it first!

During math we learned about 3-D shapes. We talked about these shapes taking up space and NOT being flat. We concluded our study with our shape share which was a huge success!

Hats off to kindness day!

April 11-15

What we are learning:

This week was our most important week in school as we read and learned about the MOST IMPORTANT story there is! We talked about Holy Week and Peter’s Denial of Jesus as well as Judas’ betrayal. We then had an amazing Easter chapel and listened to the song,” Jesus paid it all,” as we colored beautiful crosses to hang on our wall in the hall. We concluded with RESURRECTION of Jesus and how great His love for us is!!! We also said our Bible verse, Matthew 28:5,6- “The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know you are looking for Jesus who was crucified. He is not here, he has RISEN, just as he said! Come and see the place where he lay.”

In writing workshop this week we practiced writing sentences and well as writing to our pen pals from Mrs. Bronsink’s room. We used a writing checklist to make sure we are using capital letters to start our sentences, appropriate spacing and punctuation to end our sentences.
