What we are learning:

This week in Bible we read the story about  Jesus and the little children coming to Him. We talked about our verse which says, “Jesus said, ‘Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.'” We talked about how Jesus noticed how much the children loved Him and loved others. We then learned about how much adults can learn about loving Jesus by watching the children around them.  We also read from our Bible the story of Mary and Martha from the book of Luke. We then reflected on what it might mean. One student put it simply, ”We can get too busy with other things instead of focusing on Jesus.” What a beautiful summation of the story that even Mrs. Arnold needs to remember often!

In writing workshop we wrote our very own pattern book from beginning to end. We wrote a title page and then said words slowly to write the sounds we heard. We continue to practice spacing and punctuation as we write. We are keeping these in our writing folders at school in case we decide we would like to add to our stories.

In phonics we worked on the long vowel sounds for O and I. We are constantly practicing the different sounds of the vowels. This can be so tricky and we are doing a great job!

In math this week we worked on counting two groups and them putting them together. We also were introduced to take away, which we learned the fancy word for as well, subtraction or minus;). We explored these concepts through math games and group work. We will continue to add to our knowledge next week.

Rylee Key was Up in Lights this week. Her mom came to share about her as well as have a special lunch with her. We had the joy of meeting one of her favorite stuffed animals called the “wolfmaster.” We are blessed to have Rylee and her fun personality in our classroom!

Finally, we enjoyed the snow outside for the first time, in it felt like, a very long time!!!

What we are learning:

This week in Bible we continued our study of the ministry of Jesus. We talked about the Lord’s prayer and the meaning of it and how this is a model for how we should pray. We have also had some serious discussion about how important it is to focus on God as we pray. We concluded our week with the study of Nicodemus and Zacchaeus. We talked about what new life in Jesus is and how God loves us all and wants us to shine for him!

In math this week we started unit 4 on addition and subtraction. We do a lot of talking as to how we see numbers and objects in math as math language is very important.  It has been so fun to hear how kids process putting objects and numbers together. We are learning from our peers (as well as the teacher:) different ways to see things and figure out math problems!

In writing workshop we learned what brainstorming is as we are beginning to write pattern books on our own. Next week we will write a book TOTALLY on our own! You may have seen a few books come home this week but now we are putting them in our writing folders so we can finish them later if they are not done! They also took home their drawing and labeling packets from earlier in the year! It is amazing to see how much they have grown in just a few short months.

In phonics this week we continued to work on long vowel sounds this week we focused on the letter e. We had fun changing the vowels in our names from long to short or vice versa. We also brought this skill into our Daily 5 groups as we noticed vowels and discussed how as we try to decode words we can try both the long and short vowel sounds.

This week Ezekiel was Up in Lights. His mom and step dad came to share about him and Ezekiel showed us some of his taekwondo skills! He hammer-fisted a board for us!!!

The previous week Taylor Vangent was Up in Lights. Her mom came in to share about her. We were able to see Taylor’s racing gear she wears when she races quads!

We are blessed to have both Ezekiel and Taylor in our class!

What We Are Learning:

Math: This week we wrapped up our unit on shapes. We worked with our pattern blocks and discovered we could put shapes together to make new shapes. We also worked on finding out how many different ways we could make a hexagon. The class found at least 6!!!

Phonics: We learned what a long vowel is and what the 5 long vowels say. . Next week we will look closely at the vowel E. We will also come back to review these at the end of the year. One practice that is helpful for beginning readers is when they read a word and it sounds incorrect to try the word again with the long vowel sound. We talked about how our word wall word like would sound like lick if we didn’t use the long i sound.

Word Wall: we added like to our wall.

Writing: We are working on pattern books. This week we worked on a book together for the first  page and then the last two, or even three, were completed with the students trying on his/her own and then with some assistance from me or an assistant.  Writing words is a lot of work! We always say the word slowly a few times. Then we figure out the sound we hear first and figure out what letter to write. We continue slowly throughout the word, checking our work. We are using sound spelling. Proper spelling with come later. This year we focus on sounds and spelling word wall words correctly.

Bible: This week we focused on Jesus’ disciples. We read about who his disciples were and how they responded to Jesus’ call. We realized how important it is to be a disciple of Jesus in how quickly the disciples stopped what they were doing, and even quit their jobs, to respond to Jesus’ call. We had a long discussion on what it means to be a disciple and how others will know we are His disciples by how we live.

What we are learning:

This week in Bible we started our unit on Jesus’ ministry here on earth. We began this unit with the story of John the Baptist baptizing Jesus. We talked about the significance of baptism and how it indicates a desire to love and follow Jesus.

In phonics this week we listened for the ENDING sounds in words. We sorted ending sounds out and put them in a pocket chart on our white board.

In math this week we did a shape hunt through the middle school. We thought it would be fun to see a different part of school and look for shapes. We made tally marks for the different shapes we found and realized that our school is full of shapes, especially rectangles!

We kick started our new unit on pattern books in writing workshop with a snowman pancake breakfast!  We wrote a book in which each page began with the words “I see,” and then we sounded out some of the things we put on our snowmen! It was fun learning while we ate!
