What we are learning:

In Bible we wrapped up our unit on miracles, still in awe of God’s power! We read about Jesus walking on water, feeding the 5,000 and raising Lazarus from the dead. Next week we will begin to focus on the timeline to Easter.

In Daily 5 this week we continued to work on our own and in groups with me. We are working at noticing spacing and punctuation. We are also working on saying the sounds in words and blending them together.

Our Word Wall now contains a, at, and, am, come, go, here, I, it, is, in, look, like, me, my, on, see, the, this, to, up, we.

In Math this week we worked on identifying groups of five and practicing counting by 5’s and counting on from 5. We made towers of candy hearts in 5’s and counted them by 5’s. We noticed that it was quicker to count by 5’s than to count by 1’s.

In phonics this week we continued to work on CVC format, or what we call a vowel sandwich. We continue to cycle through listening for letters sounds. This week we were able to focus on beginning sounds and comparing the sounds we are hearing.

In Writing Workshop we are continuing our unit on How To writing. This is a big step for our writers. We worked as a whole group to plan our three steps for going sledding.  We are taking the time to plan our sentences using First, Next and Last. We came up with sentences out loud before writing. We are working together to write instructions this week. We will continue to do that next week before branching out on our own and writing independently.

The last two weeks have seen Tripp Elzinga and Bridger Smock up in lights. It was so fun to learn about them and some of their favorite things. We are blessed to have them in our class!

What we are learning:

In Bible this week we continued to study the miracles of Jesus. We learned about the healing of the blind man as well as the healing of the leper. We are continuing to work on our new verse, Luke 7:22 “The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor.”

In math this week we worked on sorting and classifying objects. We sorted our class by many different attributes, including strips on our shirts and the color of our eye. We then reviewed shapes and sorted and classified them. We also did lots of activities with counting candy hearts!

.

In phonics we reviewed the short sound of the vowels and practiced identifying the vowels in consonant, vowel, consonant words and then worked on writing CVC words on own. We also practiced dividing words into syllables to make it easier to sound them out as we finished our very own pattern books!

In Daily 5 we have continued to add word work into our routine. This week we used manipulatives to practice making CVC words to reinforce what we are learning in phonics.

We also enjoyed a very fun Valentine’s party with crafts, heart counting by 10 and, of course, handing out Valentines!!

What we are learning:

This week we continued our study of the miracles of Jesus. We learned about Jesus calming the storm and we talked about how it is important to trust Jesus even when we are scared as he always takes care of us! We also studied the miracle of Jesus when he told the disciples to put their nets on the other side and then they could catch fish. We talked about what it means to be a fisher of men and we all designed a fish and hung it on our door and committed to being a fisher of men! The students really seemed to grasp what it means to share our love of Jesus with those around us!

This week in phonics we worked on writing CVC words and hearing the sounds in those words. We reviewed the vowels, again as well. Next week we will concentrate on short vowel sounds.

In writing this week we wrote our very own pattern books. We will be doing one more next week and then they will be bringing some of their writing home for you to read!

We are continuing to work in our Daily 5 groups and beginning to use strategies to figure out words we don’t know. We are starting to practice the strategy of “Does this word make sense with what I’m reading?” We are also continuing to use pictures to help us decode as well as breaking words into smaller parts.

In math this week we learned to put shapes together to make different shapes. (2 squares make a rectangle, 2 triangles make a square, etc…) We then practiced with foam shapes at our table as well as reviewed the shapes we have learned this year.

The highlight of our week was 100 day! We did some math activities, a writing activity, made book marks and enjoyed hot chocolate with 10 marshmallows each! We did the math to figure out we had 170 marshmallows in our classroom! We also enjoyed a visit from zero the hero and enjoyed the treat he brought us! (Yes, it was a peppermint that of course was the shape of a zero:)

Finally, this week Tripp Elzinga was up in lights. Tripp shared with us all about his family and some of his favorite things. He also brought a top he made from LEGOS and made it spin for us! Tripp is alway very interested in science and how things work. We are blessed to have him in our class!

What we are learning:

In math this week we continued to look for groups of five and ten. We are also working almost daily on identifying teen numbers and recognizing they all have one group of ten in them.

In phonics this week we continued our study of the -at family and the CVC format. We worked on adding different beginning letters to -at and reading the new word. We then made some fun hats and practiced writing our new -at words.

.

.

We are continuing our pattern books and saying words slowly to hear sounds. We sometimes talk in “slow-mo” to hear sounds. I encourage the students to write what they hear and that it doesn’t need to be perfect. Next week we will be doing an entire book on our own!

In Bible we are continuing our study of the miracles of Jesus. Next week we will begin our new memory verse, Matthew 11:5.

This week we had our normal Daily 5 and one day we went on a hunt through school to see how many vowels we could find. Some of us found over 100! Continue to have your child read their books to you over the weekend! They are becoming good readers and the more they read their confidence will continue to grow! Confident readers are good readers!

This week Crew Lawrence was up in lights. He brought his favorite book in for us and he also wore his soccer shirt! We also learned how very much he loves Harley, his dog!

Last week, our friend Rowan Mulder was up in lights. We learned all about Rowan and he brought in a “balancing” bird for everyone. It was fun to experiment with our birds and try to figure out the science behind why they balance! Thank you Rowan! It was such a fun experience!
