A week in review: Sept.30-Oct.4

What a fun start we have had to the month of October! The cooler weather at the end of the week was gladly welcomed by our room with no air conditioning! We were once again busy learning and the highlight of our week was the trip to Degraaf Nature Center. It was fun learning about how animals use their senses, as well as seeing some real live animals close up! We then went outside and used our senses to explore the world around us! Thank you so much to all the moms and dads who drove us and helped chaperone our trip, it wouldn’t have been possible without you!

At the end of this newsletter I have included a letter from our support services teacher.

Curriculum

Bible: This week in Bible we started learning about Abraham and Sarah and how God blessed them with a baby named Isaac in their old age. We talked about how nothing is impossible with God!

Math: This week we talked about squares and rectangles and the number of sides and corners they have. We went outside to see how many we could find! I also showed them a trick with folding a piece of paper to figure out if it was a square or a rectangle!

Literacy Centers: This week we continued our study of the letters of the alphabet working on the letters Rr-Uu. Continue practicing them at home as we will soon be working on simple reading!

Engaging God’s World: The highlight of our week was the trip to Degraaf Nature Center. We learned how animals use their senses and then we went outside to use ours. At one point we put a blindfold on and felt a stick. The sticks then

went into a big pile and we had to try and find the one we had! It was so fun to be outside enjoying God’s World with the kids! My favorite part was just listening to all the noise outside, from birds chirping to the rain falling!

Daily 5: This week we reached 13 minutes in our read to self portion of Daily 5! I am so proud of them for reaching our goal!

Writing Workshop: We are learning that before writing a story, we tell a story. We practiced telling stories that had a beginning, middle and end. This worked well when we all told what we did after school (beginning) until bedtime (end). Try this type of story telling with your child. Next week we will learn how to sketch our stories.

Book of Friends: We are continuing to learn to write and recognize our friends’ names as well as drawing a picture of them. This week we drew Ellison and added her name to our Word Wall Word board!

Afternoons: This week we enjoyed quiet and play times as well as math centers, music and art. Our Friday afternoon ended with Kindergarten singing! During quiet time on Friday we were able to watch a live streamed swim race for my daughter. I alway love to share a bit of my life with them and it was so fun to answer their questions about what exactly swim meets are (Go green;)! Rest assured it was just the 50 freestyle and lasted 24 seconds!

A note from Support Services:
We have so many ways to invite your child into a place of learning this year. Sometimes that happens in the middle of a reading lesson, outdoors gathered around a piece of God’s creation, or as part of a worship time in chapel. It’s important to mention, however, that the members of our classroom offer us chances to learn and grow. We praise God for His creative work in forming each member of our class in a unique way. Each one of us has gifts to share as well as areas of challenge. Those challenges may happen in academic, social, physical, or behavioral areas. As we walk together into the school year, it is our prayer that we resemble a living, breathing picture of I Corinthians 12 – one body together in Christ. We will learn that “the eye cannot say to the hand, ‘I don’t need you’”, and we have a chance to learn that “there are many parts, but one body”. We are eager to see how God forms and grows us this year through the gift of each child and adult in our classroom community.
