A week in review: October 7-11

This week we concluded our study of the individual letters of the alphabet! Our highlights were for “W” day we had a whistle parade and for “X” day we made x-rays of ourselves outside with chalk. Next week we will dive into our sight words! I am so excited to watch the students begin to recognize words!!

Parent Teacher Conferences are October 21 and 22. The link is above if you are unsure about how to sign up. Sign ups open on October 9.  I sent a note earlier this week stating that I was having trouble with the questionnaire on line for parent teacher conferences, so I sent a hard copy home this week in your child’s folder. If you did not get one please lmk! I would love to have those asap so I can better prepare for our time together! If you are finding there is not enough room for your answer please feel free to use the back!

Remember to return library books on Tuesdays if your child would like to check out a new one.

Curriculum

Bible: This week in Bible we learned about Isaac taking Rebekah as his wife and the story of Jacob and Esau and the birthright. We watched a short video to go along with this story.

Math: This week in math we continued working on counting and recognizing the numbers 1-10. We also did some simple addition using manipulatives, including candy! We also worked on writing numbers the school way!

Literacy Centers: This week we finished cycing through the alphabet! We learned about the letters Vv-Zz. Our highlights, as I stated above, were “our x-rays” and our whistle parade. This next cycle will focus more on handwriting. We use Handwriting without Tears curriculum and it does a beautiful job of teaching proper strokes and letter formation. You may remind your child at home to write “the school way.”  As the alphabet focus decreases slightly, we will focus on learning words. We call them word wall words. These are words that are in the majority of books we will begin reading. My hope is that your children will begin to memorize the words. You will see word wall books coming home in a bag. I would love for these to stay together and that you would read it with your child (and soon he/she will read it to you!).

Daily 5: This week we worked on writing workshop (see below) so that next week that will be added to our choices for daily 5!

Engaging God’s World: This week we started our PBL(project based learning) as we talked about maps and what we need maps for. We will continue to talk about this for the next few weeks before grandparents day as we make maps of our school so they can get around!

Writing workshop: This week we continued to draw pictures that show true stories of things that have happened to us. We are now in the beginning process of putting labels on our drawings. We practiced labeling by putting post it notes on Mrs. Arnold!

Book of Friends: This week we added Evelyn to our book of friends and to our word wall word board. It was also extra fun because we celebrated Evelyn’s birthday as well!

Up in Lights: This week Graham Koning was Up in Lights! Graham’s mom came and share a little more about who he is and some of his favorite things! We are so blessed to have Graham in our class this year, his smile and sense of humor put a smile on everyone’s face!

Afternoons: This week we enjoyed our quiet and play times as well as art, music, kindergarten singing, math centers and book shop! Book shop is when we exchange books in our book boxes for new ones!
