Week of February 26

Reminders:

Chapel February 28 at 9 am All are Welcome.

This week in Kindergarten…

We continue working on reading strategies during Daily 5. We are looking at the pictures for clues, sounding out the letters and deciding if it makes sense. This is a good habit to get into. We want to understand  what we are reading. The class is practicing writing and reading word wall words, writing stories, listening to reading on iPads and reading to a friend.

In Phonics we tried to think of a place to visit that started with the first sound in our name and something to bring with us that started with that same sound. It was tricky!

In Handwriting we practiced more lower case letters: a d g. We noticed that a was in the middle of our lines, d was tall and g went low. We are trying to stay in the lines and write the letters the school way.

In Writing Workshop we actually didn’t write! We are practicing small moment stories by first telling a story. We want to have a beginning middle and end to our stories.

We added two more words to our word wall: what and when. These are a little bit harder to read, but once again, these are words we are seeing and hearing all the time.  It is so fun to see the class notice this. We read our word wall books and then wrote our own sentence at the end. We tried hard to begin with a capital letter and end with a period or question mark.

In Bible we are learning about Jesus’ miracles. We thought that miracles are amazing things that only God/Jesus have the power to do. We read about Jesus turning water into wine and the fisherman catching many fish.

Week of February 20

February 19 – No School

We had such a fun time Wednesday celebrating 100th day and Valentine’s. We talked about our superpowers that come from God. They are the fruit of the spirit. During the party, groups of kids picked a favorite and made their super power symbols to show Peace, Joy and Love.

Thank you to our party planner: Suzanne and our party helpers: Linnay, Meg and Jamie. Your work made it such a fun party!

In Daily 5 this week we did not add new books to our book bags, but continued to read from our ones from last week. We worked on looking at the letters and sounding out the letters sounds to read a word. Look for sounding out cards or word wall cards in your child’s bag this weekend! Please review 3-4 at a time.

In Math we continued to work on addition, writing numbers and counting by 10.

In handwriting we are working on lower case letters. This week we slowed down to focus on the tricky angles of v and w.

In writing we had an awesome celebration reading our favorite pattern book. Each child chose their favorite book that they had written and took a turn reading it to the class and showing it to them on the document camera. They did a fantastic job! All of those pattern books were sent home Thursday.

In phonics we continue to stretch out words and listen for letter sounds.

In poetry we focused on our two new word wall words: who and where.

Daily 5-With several students out this past week, we adjust some of our small groups and still introduced a few new books. Some are getting a little more challenging as students continue to grow in their reading.  Word work choices continue to review word wall words and CVC (consonant vowel consonant) words. These are great to practice reading and writing at home as well! As I am writing, I realize I was not able to put word wall word cards in everyone’s book bag. I will do that this week!

Bible-We read the story of Jesus and Mary and Martha. We were reminded of the importance of spending time with God. We talked about how every day we talked to God in prayers. Sometimes we have long times of studying a Bible story or a short time reading a devotion, but every day we are seeking God.

Math-This week we made posters to display how 10 plus another number make a teen. We continue to look for numbers in groups to add more easily. We are also using mini erasers to help us add and subtract.

Poetry-We have fun reading the poem without the word wall word and quickly realize how important the word is! We write in our word wall word and re read the poem and it sounds much better 🙂 It is great practice for the class to read and write the word wall words.

Handwriting-We are back into handwriting practice and are now starting lower case letters. This week we learned about magic c, o and s. It was amazing to see the improvement in the letter s after we talked about it starting with a small magic c.

Afternoon are fun and busy with math daily 3 and play. This week Thursday the class decided to move all the tables in our classroom to make tunnels. It was great to see the kids working together and talking through ideas on the best way to make this work.

Kindergarten/Young 5’s Registration: Tuesday, February 6 6:45PM  *Online. – More information regarding Kindergarten: https://www.zcs.org/classroom/kindergarten/  Registration link: https://zcskindergarten.eventbrite.com

Daily 5 – Students are advancing in their reading levels and letter activities. We work on reading as well as continue to build our letter/sound recognition.

Writing Workshop – I have been so impressed with the hard work your children are doing in writing! We continue to work on writing pattern books. This week, students were able to choose their own phrase for their book. The pattern could be “I like”, “see the”, “Look at the”. After choosing a topic, children would sound out the words for the rest of the sentence. A book about food may read: I like apples. I like cookies. I like donuts.  It is a lot of work and the class is doing great!

Phonics – We learned about word families. There are some words that end with the same letters and sounds. This week we wrote out all of the three letter words we could think of that ended with at. We wrote sat, cat, fat, hat, bat, mat, pat, etc. Throughout the week we reviewed the at words by writing them, building them with cut out letters, reading them and matching them. We will continue to learn about different word families in the coming weeks.

Bible – We began our new Bible verse: Matthew 19:14 Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” The class loves hearing how Jesus welcome children 🙂 We also read about Jesus’ kindness towards the Samaritan women (the woman at the well).

Engaging God’s World-We continue to explore motion through observation and experiments. This week we will learn about push and pull.

Math – We have enjoyed our Math centers in the afternoon as well as one morning a week. We continue to build our skills in addition as well number writing. We are also learning about teen numbers as ten and a few more.
