It is fun to wear Christmas colors, fun head bands or necklaces. Just keep in mind they get hot when running. T shirts are a great option! We are running with a 5th grade class so there will be more kids and parents in the gym. We will take a class picture by the Christmas tree when we are finished.

This week in Kindergarten…

We finished our Nativity Box. This is one of my favorite projects to do in Kindergarten. I love the excitement the kids have in making each character. I love to see them act out the first Christmas using what they have made.

We have been reading a lot of re-telling Christmas picture books. Those have been wonderful in supporting that Jesus is the reason for the season.

Math-we had fun making different shapes with straws and play-doh.

Writing Workshop: We have enjoyed discovering items in a stocking and writing out the words. We continue to practice stretching out words and listening for letter sounds.

Word Wall Words: We have learned a, at, go, here, I, is, look, like, me, see, the, up, we. This is a great list to continue to practice reading and writing these words at home.

Outdoor Learning brought us out on the sidewalk looking for Christmas cards in the neighborhood right by school. We would stop and sing when we found one.

Elijah was our friend UP IN LIGHTS this week. Elijah loves to explore outdoors and one of his favorite places is the Grand Rapids Museum. We were able to see Elijah special teddy bears this week for his show and tell.

This week in Kindergarten…

Writing Workshop: Over the next few weeks we will continue to work on writing lists. We are taking turns reaching into a stocking and pulling out items to sound out and write on our list. We try to work on about 4-6 words during  a writing workshop. This is a good challenge, but not too overwhelming for our beginning writers. We work on saying a word slowly and writing each sound we here. Re-reading our writing is part of our workshop to check our work.

Daily 5: We continue to work on reading, writing and word work during this time.

Bible: We started our work on our nativity box this week! We began with making an angel. We learned how God used the angel as a special messenger to deliver the news of Jesus to Mary, Joseph, the shepherds and wisemen. We also made Mary and Joseph. How special to be chosen to raise baby Jesus.

We read about the second week of advent. The love candle will be lit on Sunday. God’s love for us is so big, he sent us Jesus.

Math: We enjoyed sorting shapes and using shapes to create something. 🙂

This week Blaze visited our classroom. He was introduced to us and we learned a special wave that we have for Blaze if we see him in the hallway.

Declan was our friend UP IN LIGHTS! We learned that Declan loves trains and police. It was special to see the hat he wore as a baby. We enjoyed his mom visiting us and his Oma reading to us.

Writing Workshop: We continue writing lists together. This has been so fun! I love to see the kids writing and trying to sound out words.

Daily 5: The class has worked so hard and I have been so proud of the quiet work that they are doing!

Bible: We started our Christmas unit this week by reading the story of Zechariah. I love that we can take our time and reflect on so many details God put into place in his amazing plan for us. Zechariah was visit by an angel. This was amazing to our students. The promise of John is important for preparing the way for Jesus. We also learned about advent and HOPE. God’s promise gives us hope!

Phonemic Awareness: We continue to work on listening for sounds and  understanding that words are made of sounds put together.

Math: We are beginning to learn about shapes. This week we looked for shapes around school. We found so many! We worked on describing the shapes that we saw (it has 4 sides, it has 3 points, it goes around, etc).

Engaging God’s World: We continue to notice the weather and talk about what to wear for different weather.

Nature Rich Learning: This week it was perfect to have snow. We were able to have an outdoor kitchen!

Our friend Crosby was Up In Lights. We learned that Crosby has been playing hockey since he was three. We enjoyed seeing his hockey gear. We also listened to the book, “Do Not Let the Pigeon Drive the Sleigh.” You are such a kind friend Crosby! We enjoyed celebrating you and learning more about you this week.
