We love ALL of our friends will ALL different abilities!

March 31-April 7: Spring Break

What We Have Been Learning:

Bible: We began our Easter Timeline. We are slowly working through the details that God put into place in order for Jesus to die on the cross for our sins. We began with a celebration on what we call palm Sunday. We sang Hosanna and praised Jesus! We read about a special supper Jesus had with his disciples where He explained that his body and blood would be sacrificed for us. We saw Jesus’ example of being a servant when he washed his disciples feet. We also were saddened that one of Jesus’ disciples, Judas, would betray him. We saw that Jesus prayed to God and we can too when things are hard.

We reviewed many part of the Easter story on our nature walk Thursday afternoon.

Writing Workshop: We continue to work together to write how to instructions.

Phonics: This week we focused on three vowels: a, e, and i.

Math: We worked on writing expressions for story problems and enjoyed math centers to practice addition and number writing.

We continue to enjoy our secret readers!

This week we learned more about our friend Isaac when he was up in lights. Isaac and his family are temporarily in Michigan. His home is actually in Kenya. It was fun to learn more about what Isaac sees in Kenya. Ask your child if they remember what animal Isaac sees.

We are encouraging students and staff to go all out on March 24 to celebrate our friends in the building by wearing CrAzY sOcKs for Down Syndrome, GREEN for Cerebral Palsy awareness and BLUE for Autism!

March 31-April 7: Spring Break

What We Have Been Learning:

Bible: We finished reading some of the parables Jesus told. We read about the Lost Sheep, the Lost Son, the Good Samaritan, The Wise and Foolish Builders and how to pray with a humble heart. We loved listening and learning lessons.

Writing Workshop: We are moving on to how to writing. We put three piece puzzles together that had sequencing pictures on them. We practiced using the words: first, next and last. Later in the week we worked as a whole class to write how to have a picnic. We will continue some whole group writing and then move toward more independent writing.

Phonemic Awareness: We continue to play with words and sounds. A favorite activity this week has been watching our phonemic awareness video and then taking turns being the teacher to practice the lesson. If you ask your child to show you how Mrs. Votari teaches, he/she will be able to 🙂

Math: This week we continue our work with story problems. This was one with unknown addends: Lin picked 8 apples at the orchard. Some of the apples were yellow. The rest of the apples were red. Students worked in partners to figure out the different combinations of red and yellow apples that Lin may have picked.

We love having secret readers! When the door knocks, it is a surprise to see who is coming to read a book.

We celebrated Jonah Up In Lights this week. We love Jonah’s smiles and are excited to learn about him. He is hoping to be a soccer play. He was able to show us his dog.

What We Have Been Learning:

Math: We are finishing our 4th unit in Math. This unit explored addition and subtraction. If your child makes an ominous noise after you say subtraction, it is because we were being a little dramatic learning that it means take away 🙂

Phonemic Awareness: this week we listened and identified the beginning sounds in words that begin with blends. For example: hearing /f/ at the beginning of frog. This is harder, but the kids were getting it!

Bible: We enjoyed reading about many miracles. We focused on Jesus performing miracles to show God’s power. We love to review some of the miracles by singing this song.

Daily 5: It has been so fun meeting with our reading groups this week. The kids are working on a variety of skills. Some are focusing on writing, others are working on sounding out words. It is a time of year that kids are growing and we are learning together 🙂

Writing: We are finishing up pattern books and choosing one to fix and fancy. We will take some time next week to read our favorite book to the class.

Phonics: We continue to work on CVC words.

Many students told me it felt like summer when we hit 50 this week. The class voted for outdoor play in the afternoon. It was fun to be outside with just our class.
