What We Have Been Learning:

  • This week our devotions have been full of good reminders to be kind and loving. We have asked God to help us think before we speak and treat others the way we would want to be treated. It is wonderful to see everyone trying to live this out. We have also talked a lot about forgiveness and I have seen friends forgive each other and ask what he/she can do to make it better.
  • We continue to practice our Bible verse, Matthew 19:14

Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”

  • We added come to our word wall
  • Our writers have been working so hard! We continue to practice writing sentences and sounding out words. I am so impressed with the writing I am seeing.
  • Engaging God’s World has been creative and fun and the kids have taken charge building ramps and experimenting with motion and gravity. This week’s challenge was to figure out a way to make an object stop at the end of the ramp.
  • In Math we are focusing the next few weeks on writing numbers, number partners and teen numbers. We use manipulatives, workbook pages and lots of writing materials to really get to know these concepts.

What We Are Learning…

  • This week in Math we focused on partners that add together and their switch partner. For example 2 and 5 are partners that add together to make 7. The switch partner is 5 and 2.
  • In Daily 5 we are working on guided reading groups and I have been assessing readers. I continue to see growth in all of our students!
  • In Writing this week we wrote our first pattern book where each child chose his/her own sentence pattern and theme for the book. I was amazed at how hard the class worked on these.
  • In Bible we read about Jesus welcoming children, teaching about prayer and Nicodemus reminding us how Jesus gives us a new life in him.

Matthew 19:14 Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belong to such as these.”

Our Father in Heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us today our daily bread. forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen

  • We added this to our word wall which now holds a, at, and, am, go, here, I, is, look, lik, me, see, the, this, up, we.
  • We continue to explore the world God made through our science unit. This week we explored motion through the use of ramps and materials in our classroom. Students designed and then built a ramp. After testing each design, we realized some cars still need a push to move. The kids took what they learned and built new ramps to have the cars move with just gravity. It was wonderful learning together!

What We Have Been Learning:

  • We reviewed our responsibilities for Daily 5 at the beginning of the week. We remembered that we need to work the whole time, write the whole time or listen to reading the whole time. 🙂 We tested our stamina to see if we could work for 15 minutes. The class did well! We talked about why it might be difficult (maybe distractions near us) and how to help (find a good spot and stay there).
  • In writing we learned about pattern books. These books have a sentence on each page that begins the same way (a pattern). We read the book “I See January” and traced the words to understand the pattern book. We wrote two other books this week “I See” and “I Like.” I love starting with pattern books because the first few words in the sentence (the pattern) are words from the word wall. These are words most students can read and write. The kids think of the last word for the sentence and work very hard sounding it out and writing the letters they hear. They are working so hard. I am so proud of them!
  • In math we jumped right in to unit 3. We are focusing on two major concepts, partners and teen numbers. To introduce teens, we start by recognizing groups of ten and then adding a few more. We were able to use manipulatives to show ten plus more and practice number order 1-10.
  • We added and and am to the word wall. We now have a, at, and, am, go, here, I, is, look, like, me, see, the, up and we.
  • In Bible we are beginning to learn about Jesus’ ministry. We learned that Jesus was baptized by his cousin John. We also learned about Jesus choosing disciples to walk with him. We too would like to be fishers of men!
  • On Friday we began a new study of motion. We learned push and pull. We went out to the playground to observe and experiment with push and pull. Around the house this weekend, ask your child to show you ways to push and pull.
  • Here is the WAAG to give you a peak at what we will learn about next week.
