This week in kindergarten…

In Bible we focused on one person or thing each day that God specifically used in the first Christmas. We learned about shepherds watching over their sheep hearing the good news of Jesus’s birth from angels. We learned about wise men who traveled so far to meet the new king. We learned of a young girl names Mary who was so full of faith she praised God after the angel told her she would have a baby. We learned about Joseph, the special man God chose to be Jesus’ adopted daddy on earth. It was special to read stories about these people and make each one for our nativity. I hope you enjoy listening to your children telling these stories and showing you their nativity box.

We continue to work on our Bible verse from Luke 2:6-7

While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in the manger because there was no room for them in the inn.

In Daily 5 we read new books as well as worked on beginning sounds. We added lists to our work on writing choice.

In Phonics and writing we stretched out words listening for the sounds and writing them down. We began making lists. First we made a list of our friends, then a list of school supplies and a list of our favorite candy 🙂 Enjoy making a list with your child at home.

Word Wall: We added here and and to the wall. Please continue to review these words at home: a, at, and, go, here, I, is, look, like, me, see, the, up and we.

In Math we continue to work on addition and subtraction, writing numbers and recognizing numbers. We are beginning to count by tens. The class explored the classroom to find triangles. Look for shapes around your home.

This week in Kindergarten…

We are becoming consistent in reading in our Daily 5 groups. The class enjoys choosing different activities to help them learn letters, sounds and words. I love the independent learning that takes place during this time. It is also a favorite time of mine as I work with small groups.

In Math we continue to work with adding more to 5. We used a 5 group penny strip this week to help us add with 5. This is something that can be done at home with pennies. We are working on number writing as well.

In Phonics we continue to listen for beginning sounds. I love the confidence that I am seeing in your children! We will work on stretching out words to listen for middle and end sounds as well.

In Handwriting we starting with uppercase C and then turned that into O and then learned to make G and Q. The class did great! G and Q are especially tricky to write the school way.

In Bible we are learning a new verse:

While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in the manger because there was no room for them in the inn. Luke 2: 6-7

We began reading the story of Jesus’ birth beginning with the angel Gabriel visiting Zechariah and the special message that Zechariah’s wife, Elizabeth, would have a baby and his name shall be John. We learned that angels are special messengers from God. We read about the angel visiting Mary and Joseph and the Shepherds. We emphasized that we are like the shepherds and need to spread the good news of Jesus. We are working on a special nativity box to remember all of the people and even animals God had in place for the first Christmas.

We are working on creating a nativity scene with toilet paper tubes. It is the sweetest project that your children are excited to continue!

In Social studies we are beginning to talk about needs and wants. This is a tricky thing! We have had great discussions!! I encourage you to continue these conversations at home.

We added is and like to our word wall. Please continue to review these words (a, at, go, I, look, me, see, the, up, we, is, like) at home.
