What We Have Been Learning:

Sometimes when we need to get outside, we take our devotions with us 🙂

A was for airplanes (paper)! We made our own and flew them down the halls!

Our pen pal writing unit ended with a fun time doing activities and eating with our pen pals. It was so fun to see the classes mix and get a long so well.

B was for bubbles leading us down the sidewalk on our way to music Friday morning.

See the video below. 🙂

Phonics: We focused on vowel i, practicing the short and long vowel sounds. We also reviewed diagraphs wh and th. I am so impressed with this class. They are learning diagraphs so well! This is something that will continue to be taught in first grade. Our phonemic awareness also included lessons on diagraphs and I can see what a big difference it is making on our learning this year.

Math: This unit we are focusing on teen numbers. We are using many tools to see a teen as ten plus a few more.

Engaging God’s World: we reviewed living and non-living. Next week we will see some living animals and begin our PBL discussions.

Handwriting: We have been setting aside a little time each week to reteach proper letter formation. I am noticing an improvement on handwriting, especially when I ask students to carefully write. I hope you can notice a difference as well.

Bible: We read about Pentecost and the Holy Spirit. It was a great reminder once again of God’s perfect plan. When Jesus ascended, he didn’t abandon his disciples. They had and we can have the Holy Spirit inside of us.

What We Have Been Learning:

We enjoyed our outdoor learning experience with Maestra Patrick on Thursday afternoon. We walked to Lawrence Street Park and looked for word wall words. Students wrote down the words they found and then we reviewed the words. We were fortunate to avoid the rain!

Math: We are beginning a new unit that focuses on teen numbers.

Writing: We have started to write our pen pals from Mrs. Arnold’s classroom. This is a fun way to work on our writing skills and build friendships between the classes.

Daily 5: This week we enjoyed working with new word work centers. Most groups were able to receive a new book to add to their book bags.

Engaging God’s World: We began a new unit on Living and Non-living things. Please ask your child how we know if something is living? We will continue this study for the next few weeks. It will lead into our PBL (project based learning) project.

Phonics: We focused on vowel e and the diagraphs ch and sh.

What We Have Been Learning:

Burn Bright Behaviors: This week we have focused on choosing: respect, responsibility and safety. Some of these behaviors include choosing respect in the hallway by using a quiet voice and keeping hands to yourself, choosing responsibility in the bathroom by keeping it clean, and choosing safety on the playground by using play equipment the way it was intended. All adults in the building have been looking our for these positive behaviors. When we see it we have been encouraging by saying “good job” or giving a thumb’s up and sometimes giving a burn bright ticket. We are working really hard on earning tickets AND encouraging positive behavior. One of our friends one a raffle on Friday!

Math: We have working on understanding all the ways to make ten. This is something that can be practiced at home. Find ten items (toys, crackers, rocks outside, etc) and show different combinations of the items (1+9, 2+8, 3+7 and so on).

Writing Workshop: We continue to work on writing How To instructions. This week we saw a short clip of Agent Oso where how to jump rope was explained in three simple steps. We wrote out the instructions after we tried it out. Sounding out words is still difficult. We are practicing chopping a words into sounds and writing out the letters.

Daily 5: We learned about a few new word work activities: a game and puzzle cards. It was also so nice out this week, we just had to read outside.

Phonemic Awareness: This week we were introduced to diagraphs. This is when two letters make one sound. We listened for sh, ch and th.

Bible: We remembered Easter and that Jesus rose from the dead! It was exciting to read about his friends seeing him again.
