What We Have Been Learning:

Daily 5: We started something new this week. I worked with a small group while the rest of the class did Read to Self. Next week we will continue this routine and add some word work. It is wonderful to see that class becoming more independent in some work.

Bible: We are learning about God’s promises to Abraham.

Phonemic Awareness: The class has done a wonderful job learning beginning sounds, ending sounds, rhymes and syllables. We are increasing the number of syllables and finding more challenging words.

Math: We are comparing numbers, writing numerals, seeing the same values presented in different ways. Our new math curriculum helps us use math and talk through math in many different ways. It continues to stretch our thinking!

Writing Workshop: We are working on sketching true stories. We begin with a short (true) story and tell it to a friend. Our next step is to tell the story and figure out what we could sketch to represent the different parts of the story. After that we use pencil and paper to sketch the story. I encourage students to review work and decide if they need to make any adjustments. This is a writing process that will expand over time. It takes a lot of planning and follow through.

Word Wall Words: we now have a, I, look, see and the on the wall. We are learning to read and write these words.

We enjoyed celebrating Nolan Up In Lights this week! We had fun dancing to his favorite song, listening to his favorite book and learning more about our friend.

week ending October 14

Thank you for such sweet birthday wishes and gifts!

Reminders:

We only have school next week Monday and Tuesday.

No school October 19-21.

October 28: Grandparents Day! This is a half day for students and such a fun morning to spend with grandparents and grandfriends.

*Please note that kindergarten does not submit report cards this term. We fill out report cards in January and June.

This was a display in chapel this week Wednesday. Mrs. Sprick talked about graphting. Using the fruit tree as a visual and connecting it to Romans 11 1But if some of the branches were broken off, and you, although a wild olive shoot, were grafted in among the others and now share in the nourishing root[b] of the olive tree,18 do not be arrogant toward the branches. If you are, remember it is not you who support the root, but the root that supports you. She reminded us that we are all different, but we all belong to the body of Christ.

What We Have Been Learning:

Read to Self: this week we had a new record: 11 minutes! This is wonderful. I started to work with one student and the rest of the class was reading. this is why we are building stamina.

Bible: We read about the Tower of Babel. We noticed that people were focused on themselves and wanting to be great, but we know that we should focus on God because he is the greatest.

Math: One main concept we were working on this week is learning the word enough. If I have 5 pencils and 4 friends, do I have enough for everyone? Many students said no, because they are thinking equal. We used a few different stories to show the difference between enough and equal. We also used pictures to ask Math problems. Looking at a scene, partners would take turns asking “How Many _?”

Phonemic Awareness and Phonics: This week both lessons included syllables. This is how words are broken apart. The class did a really good job figuring this out and breaking apart words properly. We also continue to listen for beginning sounds and ending sounds.

Writing Workshop: We learned that writing begins with telling stories. We practiced telling stories that were true and had a beginning, middle and end.
