There is a variety of summer camps offered at ZCS. Please check out a few here:

    • from our athletic director …

As summer starts to fill up I wanted to remind you that I still have openings for boys and girls basketball camp.  This is a great camp to learn some basics about basketball for beginners but also to gain skills and knowledge for those more experienced.  The activities are geared to the age and skill level of the campers to maximize their learning and fun.  They will be doing a variety of drills, games, and activities that help them have fun and grow in their love for the game.

  • from our Spanish teachers…

Maestra Zondervan will be offering two camps this summer. One option is for 4-6 year olds and the other option is for 6-8 year olds. Registration and additional details can be found here. This camp is open to all children in our community. No Spanish background needed.

If you have any questions please contact Maria Klompmaker at mklompmaker@zcs.org

What We Have Been Learning:

In Math we explored 3 dimensional shapes. We first reviewed 1 dimensional/flat shapes and then looked at 3 dimensional shapes. We explored the classroom and outdoors looking for cubes, pyramids, spheres, rectangular prisms and cones. This is a great activity for home as well! Keep reviewing shape vocabulary as those are difficult words for kindergartners to remember.

In Daily 5 we opened up all of our book choices and the kids have been loving reading so many different books. I love to see them sharing their book choices and enjoying books together.

In Engaging God’s World this has been a busy week with our PBL zooms. Each child has worked so hard learning and preparing for their presentation. It has been fun to celebrate their great learning. I apologize that I have not taken pictures. It has been busy 🙂

In Phonics we went on vowel hunts. I chose one vowel and asked each child to find something in the classroom that has the vowel in it. It could be at the beginning, middle or end of the word. This is another great idea for home this summer. Get out a clipboard and your child can write what they find as well.

In Bible we have read about the travels of Paul, his arrest and breaking free from jail. The excitement of the early church has been felt and we are reminded to live as passionately telling everyone about Jesus!

  • From the office…Parents, as we spend more time outdoors, if you plan to send sunscreen to school with your child, please also send a note of permission to your child’s teacher.  Students should not share sunscreen with other students, and the school will not provide sunscreen to students.

What We Are Learning:

In Writing Workshop we are building on our one really good sentence by adding one to two more sentences to add detail. This is a small moment story. I am so impressed by the writing that I am seeing! I continue to ask each child to reread his/her writing to make sure it is written well.

Our Daily 5 time at the beginning of the week was spent working on our PBL (animal) project. The kids have been working so hard creating, writing and learning! I have loved standing back and gently guiding as groups have worked so well together. I am excited for the kids to share what they have learned next week. Here are the zoom times for each group. Zoom links are sent by email (for safety).

Tuesday @ 11am Penguin Group (Addi, Mazy, Lucille, Uriah)

Wednesday @ 11am Tiger Group (Ben D., Ben V., Owen, Ike)

Thursday @ 11am Ant Group (Dawson, Dezmon, Hazael, Judah)

Friday @9:30am Shark Group (Rocky, Carter, Oliver, Luke)

Friday @11 am Rabbit Group (Cora, Ellie, Braden, Elsa)

At the end of the week we were able to have our regular Daily 5 choices and the kids are continuing to read and write all the time! 🙂

In Math we were able to enjoy Math Centers. the kids could choose from putting cards in order by 5’s, matching apples with numbers and counting seeds, matching numbers and ladybugs, garden math addition, adding and subtracting using manipulatives.

In Phonics this week we worked on r blends (dr, fr, gr, tr, br). We have also been working on vowels.

Our word wall has been filled with color words (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, pink, black, brown, white).

  • Please send in book bags. This is the last weekend books will go home from our leveled library.
  • Please send in Library books by Tuesday. We are finished with library this year. Mrs. Joustra will now have the huge task of collecting library books from the whole school and checking them back in.
  • Thank you for all you are doing at home! This time of year can fill easily with extra things and we begin to get that itch for summer. I appreciate the extra time it is taking to put your child to bed when it is still daylight, the search for snacks and lunches that everyone isn’t tired of eating and finding clothes for ever changing weather! I see you and applaud your efforts! 🙂

What We Have Been Learning:

In Math we are reviewing partners to make ten. We are also spending some time comparing numbers and using the vocabulary greater and less when comparing.

In Handwriting we have finished upper case letters! We will continue to review and move towards lower case.

In Phonics this week we practiced l blends (bl, fl, pl. sl, cl, gl). These can be difficult to hear, but it has been good to introduce them. Students will continue learning blends in first grade.

In Daily 5 we continue to grow as readers. Our “rounds” have been longer this week and I am amazed at the stamina of our class. I love to see the growth they have made!

In writing we are focused on writing “really good sentences.” Each child is thinking of a sentence to write and working really hard and sounding out words and writing them down. After the sentence is written, I am trying to develop the habit of re-reading work to make sure the child understands and is able to read it back. If a student finishes one sentence, I will ask he/she to write another sentence that gives more detail. For example, the first sentence may read I went for a walk. The next sentence may read My sister went with me.  We are building up to writing a small moment story.

In Bible this week we read about Pentecost and learned about the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We read about God’s power working through Peter and healing the lame man. Peter’s faith was so strong!

Other Reminders:

  • please make sure your child has gym shoes for Monday (there has been some shoe switching or size adjusting going on. 🙂 The kids are growing!!
  • Along with growing in shoe size, some are growing appetites. Please check in with your child about their lunch and snack choices to make sure they have enough. Thank you!
  • Remember to send library books in Monday! We love listening to Mrs. Joustra read and picking out new books each week.

What We Have Been Learning:

We began our PBL for spring. After learning about living things, we were curious about different animals. The class is working in groups to learn more about one animal. This week, each group made a list of questions they want to know about the animal they are studying. Next week we will begin researching the animal and writing answers in our journals. This is a fun project and a lot of work! It truly shows how much your children have grown this year to do this type of work! It is awesome!

In Daily 5 we brought out another “word work box”. Students look at a picture card and then build words with foam letters. This is great practice for writing!

In writing workshop we focused on writing one sentence well. We are checking our own word making sure we began with an uppercase letter and ended the sentence with a period. We are checking that our writing is neat and that there are finger spaces between words. We are using word wall words in our writing and drawing a picture to match the sentence.

We continue we work on handwriting. This week we focuses on A and S.

In Math we reviewed flat shapes as we begin to learn about 3 dimensional shapes next week. We used our lemonaide stand to create addition and subtraction problems. For example 3 apples plus 7 cups of lemonaide equal 10 items. This is a fun way to keep practicing addition and subtraction. Make sure your child is writing out the equation as well. They are getting better and better at number writing.

Creative Chalk drawing on C day.

We enjoyed Experiment day outside! We test 4 kinds of soda (grape, orange, dr. pepper and diet coke) with mentos to see which made the higher blast! Then we tested diet coke with fruity mentos and mint mentos.
