What We Have Been Learning:

Reading: I have loved doing some formal assessments with each child. I see how God created each child with unique gifts and abilities. I love to see the areas that your children shine and it truly helps me form lesson plans to help other areas grow. This week we have been working on sounding out words in small groups and creating words with letters in word work. The class is enjoying writing pattern books.

Phonemic Awareness: We continue to enjoy playing with words. We say one words – like cat. Then we take away the c and try to make more words by adding a different sound to the beginning.

Engaging God’s World: We are exploring motion. Playing outside was a helpful way to begin. Going down a sledding hill or a slide is a type of motion. The class planned out how to make their own ramp for stuffies to go down. We also tried to figure out a way to help the stuffy stop.

Math: We are adding up groups of items. This week we learned a few strategies for counting items that are scattered. It is helpful to line them up or if it is on paper, it is helpful to cross items off as we count.

Grayson was our friend Up in Lights! We love Grayson’s joyful personality. We learned that he loves Mario even more than we thought and enjoyed his mom reading us his new Mario Book.

What We Have Been Learning:

Bible: We opened up our Bibles and read about Anna and Simeon meeting Jesus and about Jesus in the temple. We are excited to continue to learn more about Jesus!

Phonemic Awareness: We are working really hard on chopping words into sounds and blending sounds together. This is something that can be done on car rides or anytime! Think of a CVC word (consonant vowel consonant) and say each sound to your child. See if he/she can blend the sounds together to figure out the word. You can also say a word and have your child say each sound.

Writing Workshop: We continue to work on our pattern books. This is when our sounding out practice has come in. We are sounding out words and writing the letters.

Math: We will continue to review shapes this year, but we wrapped up our 3rd math unit. Next week we will move on towards adding and subtracting story problems within 10.

Daily 5: We have been able to review expectations for each center and enjoyed new word work. We are now building word wall words and other words using magnetic letters.

Here is our current list of word wall words: a, at, and, go, here, is, look, like, me, see, the, this, up, we.

Even with a few snow days we were able to celebrate Gracelynn Up In Lights! She is a kind friend that loves to help others. We learned how much she loves horses and loves riding them!
