This week in Kindergarten…

In Daily 5 we reviewed how we get started right away, work quietly and work the whole time. We are working to become better readers 🙂 I am so excited to see all of these children continue to grow!

Phonics: We reviewed word families at and an

Math: We continue to understand teen numbers as 10 plus a few more, worked on building shapes from other shapes and continue to practice adding and subtracting.

Writing Workshop: We are working on writing how to instructions. This week we saw snow outside and wrote how to build a snowman. We continue to practice stretching words and listening for letters sounds as we write.

Word Wall: we added who to our list: a, at, and, am, come, go, here, I, is, it, in, look, like, me, my, on, see, the, this, to, up and we.

Bible: We read of Jesus healing a blind man. We learned that this man was not blind from sin, but to show God’s power. We talked about some bad or sad things happening to good people and that God can turn it into something miraculous with HIS power. We also read about Jesus walking on water.  We are practicing our Bible verse:

The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cured, the deaf here, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor. Luke 7:22

This week in Kindergarten…

It was a transition for everyone to come back to school after a long weekend. We reviewed our expectations for school that the class created earlier this year. We encourage each other to be kind, listen first, respect another person’s space, keep our school clean and be ready to learn.

Daily 5: The class continues to keep me going back to our leveled library for books that meet their growing levels! We continue to work on strategies when reading a word we do not know.

Word Wall: it and in were added to a, at, and, am, come, go, here, I, is, look, like, me, my, on, see, the, this, to, up and we.

Math: We worked on partners that equal 10, using manipulative to show adding and subtracting and teen numbers.

Writing Workshop: We began a new unit on how to writing. We introduced this unit by putting together 3 piece sequencing puzzles. After the puzzle was complete, we used new vocabulary (first, next, last) to describe what was happening in the pictures. The next day we drew out pictures of how to get ready for school.

Phonics: We reviewed letter sounds by reading the book “A My Name is Alice.” Each letter had a name, place and item that started with the letter sound. We then made our own version with the starter “I’m going to…and I’m taking…” It was fun thinking of places and items that begin with first letter of your child’s name.

Bible: We continue to read about miracles Jesus performed. This week we read how Jesus calmed a storm and cured a leper. We continue to be amazed at Jesus’ power.

Our new Bible verse is Luke 7:22

The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cured, the deaf here, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor.

February 14-17 No School

This week in Kindergarten…

We began the week learning about Zeeland Christian’s AMOR (Acceptance, Mindfulness, Ownership, Responsibility) initiative. We traveled the school listening to different teachers talking to us about behavior expectations. During the week I have been encouraging that expected behavior have seen the class take more ownership of behavior. We are excited as a school to continue to see this develop. We also were very excited to meet our new mascot, Ronin the Ram.

In Daily 5 we continue to work on reading strategies-what to do when we come to a word we do not know. We look at the whole word (is it long or short, beginning sound and ending sounds), we slide through each sound and then put the sounds together. We also re read the sentence to check if it makes sense.

Writing Workshop: The class continues to show me what wonderful writers they are by writing their own pattern books. They are working so hard on writing!

Phonics: We met the at family this week. We learned there are many words with the “last name” at. Ask you child to think of a few 🙂 We will continue word families for several weeks.

Word Wall: We added to to our growing list. (a, at, and, am, come, go, here, I, is, look, like, me, my, see, the, this, to, up, we)

Math: We are learning about teen numbers. We made towers of ten unifix cubes to represent the tens and added a few loose cubes to make a teen number. We are working on understanding tens and writing teen numbers.

Engaging God’s World: This week we planned (thought of an idea, talked with our partner and drew out a plan) to have a stuffed animal move down a ramp and then stop. It was so fun to see the engineering brains working in our students!

February 14-17 No School

This week in Kindergarten…

We had a fun field trip to For the Kidz. It is a great way to burn up some energy in these winter months. I loved watching each child TRY new moves and build new skills. It is so important to try and keep trying when you don’t get it the first, second or 100th time 🙂

Bible: We read stories of the Samaritan Women and Jesus. This was a little difficult to understand the concept of living water. I emphasized our eternal life with Jesus in heaven and a love of Jesus that is never ending. We also learned the importance of taking the time to learn about God and spend time with him as we read the story of Martha and Mary.  This was a good lesson for me as well.

Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belong to such as these.” Matthew 19:14

Word Wall: We added my to our growing list. (a, at, and, am, come, go, here, I, is, look, like, me, my, see, the, this, up, we)

Writing Workshop: We worked on another pattern book that each child decided a theme and words to be repeated on each page/sentence. That is a lot of choices and writing, but the class is doing so well working on it! We are also working on ending our sentence with a period.

Math: We met Ten Bug this week. She shows us how to see ten quickly in a group and count beyond 10. We will be introducing teen numbers in the next few weeks and learning 10 plus a few more.

Engaging God’s World: We began a new science unit about Motion. We learned motion is when something moves. An object needs a force to move. Push and pull are forces. We experimented with ramps and stuffed animals to see how it moves down a ramp. We will continue investigating motion in the next few weeks.

Coming up…on Monday we are joining the school for a PBIS kick off. There was a letter included in report cards explaining PBIS a little more. We are thankful that every child in school will hear the expectations for students in different areas of the school.
